Wiang Kalong Pottery: Reviving the Living Heritage of Lanna

Local arts and culture hold lasting value only when people carefully study and keep them alive. In the heart of the Lanna region, the Wiang Kalong area once stood as the largest pottery production center of its time. For Mr. Than Thijittang, born and raised in this community, fragments of ancient pottery and earthenware were a familiar part of childhood. Those shards sparked a lifelong curiosity. It took him 18 years of dedicated research, experimentation, and practice to revive and recreate authentic Wiang Kalong pottery.

Today, his work stands as a bridge between a thousand-year-old tradition and the present.

Three Families of Auspicious Designs

Mr. Than’s earthenware follows three main design directions, each rooted in local beliefs, legends, and the needs of contemporary life:

1. Auspicious animal designs These fall into four groups:

• A paired Taphian fish design representing luck, fertility, and success
• Lion, elephant, and Kirin (Kilen) mythical animal designs representing power
• Swan, pheasant, and peacock designs representing charisma
• The turtle design representing longevity

2. Auspicious flower designs Drawn from local beliefs and legends, these motifs can symbolize convenience and a problem-free life. The distinctive Kalong flower design is inspired by the legend of the White Crow that became lost in the area — giving the place its poetic name, often translated as “City of Lost Crows.”

3. A mixture of ancient and modern designs Elaborate graphic patterns that blend historical motifs with contemporary aesthetics, created to meet the tastes and practical needs of today’s customers.

Born from the Earth Itself

A defining strength of this pottery is that it is made entirely from natural materials. The clay comes from local volcanic lava deposits. It is heat-resistant and has been used in the region for centuries. The designs themselves echo traditions that stretch back a thousand years.

The production process is deliberate and traditional:

• Clay is carefully prepared and fermented
• Pieces are formed and sun-dried
• They receive a first firing at around 700 °C
• Designs are painted with natural dyes
• The pieces are coated and then fired a second time at 1,250 °C

The result is pottery that feels both ancient and alive — lightweight, distinctive, and full of quiet character.

Passing Knowledge Forward

Mr. Than often returns to a simple conviction: “Being knowledgeable and doing it alone, everything will be gone if one dies.”

With this in mind, he has made knowledge transfer a central part of his work. He organizes training courses so that younger generations can learn the techniques, understand the meaning behind the motifs, and carry forward the intention of the ancient artisans who once recorded stories and social life in clay.
