Karen Hill Tribe silver is one of the most distinctive traditional silver crafts from Northern Thailand. It stands out for its high purity (typically around 98%), fully handmade character, and deep cultural roots.
- Purity: Typically around 98 % (usually 97–99 %, closer to 99 than to 97). This is higher than standard copper-alloyed sterling (92.5 %) and is therefore stamped 925 as the Swiss legal minimum. The higher silver content gives a softer, brighter and whiter, more satiny appearance, makes the metal more malleable for detailed handwork, and tends to tarnish more slowly.
- Texture and “imperfections”: Visible hammer marks, slight variations between supposedly identical beads or charms, organic shapes, and stamped patterns are normal and desirable signs of handwork.
